Spring is in the air! It’s 26 degrees out there, not a breath of wind. Better than summer.
Apparently the flowers are better than ever this year, considered one of the world’s botanical marvels and they happen to be oh so conveniently situated just an hour’s drive up the West Coast. So why not do it in a day trip? Up the R27 to the West Coast Nature Reserve and Langebaan with its beautiful lagoon and famous Strandloeper restaurant for all you Crayfish lovers. A truly stunning natural canvas awaits you. A riotous splash of colour carpeting the mountain slopes. Catch it before it passes.
The Darling Wild Flower Show holds its 94th edition this year from the 16-18th September. Don’t miss it. Go up for the day or the weekend and also catch another national treasure Evita Bezuidenhout performing during the 5th Hello Darling Arts Festival. For those who don’t know her she’s a drag act of scurrilous satirical intent and quite excruciatingly funny. Should be an extravaganza! The flowers happily coinciding with the petals blossoms etcetera and vice versa. The arts festival runs from the 15th to the 22nd September. In all seriousness it is set to feature art exhibits, musical recitals, cabaret, theatre and all the rest. Plus the usual indulgence of food and wine. Really, really not to be missed.
Darling is just 90 minutes out of cape town along the N1 and R307.
From the 21st-24th there’s the annual Tulbagh Horse and Wildflower Show, featuring the national horse championships. This also has wildflowers as a centrepiece of the show with the flowers on view in their natural setting.
